On Our First Issue:
It is a pleasure to have an opportunity to comment on this, the
inaugural issue of The Undergraduate Science Bulletin of the University of
Georgia. The Editor, Mr. Peter Horanyi, a first-year graduate student in the Department of
Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, is to be commended for his selfless devotion to the
organization of this new venue for publication of undergraduate research on this campus.
There are only a few journals in this country devoted to the publication of research by
undergraduate students, and it is our express intent that The Undergraduate Science
Bulletin become the premiere periodical of its type in academia. Many students avail
themselves of the wonderful opportunities for research on our campus; indeed, a few
science departments now require faculty-mentored, laboratory-based research for majors.
Moreover, many students in the Honors Program submit an Honors Thesis based on independent
research under the guidance of a faculty member. With a faculty sponsor, all University of
Georgia undergraduate students in the sciences or related disciplines are eligible to
submit manuscripts to The Undergraduate Science Bulletin for consideration for
publication. The policy and operation of the journal are student-based, with the faculty
serving primarily in an advisory capacity. The long-term success of this scientific
periodical is dependent upon the support of students, faculty, and the administration;
please know that your comments and suggestions are always welcome. In closing, I wish to
acknowledge, in addition to the heroic efforts of Mr. Horanyi, begun when he was an
undergraduate on this campus, the competent assistance of Ms. Lisa Edge Horanyi in the
overall design and production of the journal.
