Purpose and Scope
The Undergraduate Science Bulletin is a general science journal intended for a broad scientific audience. This journal publishes research reports, mini-reviews and short communications of research performed by UGA students. The journal will be published at the end of each semester as a forum for undergraduate research publications based on the premise that better communication among all disciplines of sciences will aid the student body of the University of Georgia.
Research Reports describe the results of original research of exceptional importance.
Mini-Reviews summarize or re-assess data and/or ideas in a given field. These articles are solicited by invitation, however individuals wishing to prepare such articles should contact the editor prior to submitting a manuscript.
Short Communications show novelty in the use or application of an established method or the development of a new or modified technique.
Editorial Policies
Submission and Review
A University of Georgia faculty member must communicate manuscripts on behalf of a student to The Undergraduate Science Bulletin. The submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously. Manuscripts judged to be appropriate will be sent out for review. The reviewers are going to be faculty at the University of Georgia, familiar with the submitted research. If revisions are requested prior to the final decision, revised manuscripts must be received within three weeks or they will be treated as new submissions.
Journal Policies
I. It is expected that the sponsoring
faculty member has critically reviewed the manuscript and requested appropriate
revisions if deemed necessary.
II. Authorship should be limited to
those undergraduates who have contributed substantially to the work. The
corresponding author must have obtained permission from all authors for
the submission of each version of the paper and for any change in authorship.
III. The University Intellectual Property Policy will
be observed during the review and publishing process. If
requested, the Editors will coordinate all communication
between the authors and the Office of the Vice-President for Research in
order to review the manuscript for any proprietary information which would
affect intellectual property rights of the University and/or a research
sponsor.
IV. All authors and faculty members must disclose any
commercial association that might pose a Conflict of Interest in connection
with the manuscript. All funding sources supporting the work must be acknowledged.
V. Supplementary Material: Supplementary
Material (optional) provides a way to enhance papers in the Undergraduate
Science Bulletin by proving additional substantive data. The Supplementary
Material section is reviewed with the manuscript but instead of appearing
in the printed version of the journal, it will be distributed via the journal's
web site (http://bmbiris.bmb.uga.edu/tusb) at the time of publication.
Supplementary material is referred to at the appropriate point in the text
and cannot be altered by authors after papers have been accepted. This
section may take the form of supporting figures, tables, datasets, derivations.
Authors should express their interest in their cover letter to include
supplementary Material with their manuscripts. In addition, Editors may
suggest that part of the submitted data could be more suitably presented
online to save journal space and to focus the article or aid color reproduction
of the figures. (Details available on request from magyar@arches.uga.edu.)
Procedures for Submitting Manuscripts
The name, address, telephone and fax
numbers and e-mail address of the author and faculty member that is communicating
the paper should be provided in the cover letter. The cover letter should
also contain information of the project at hand, along with the student’s
major and class. The Editors are always open to any questions or concerns
not covered by established policy. The author(s)’s name and the sponsoring
professor’s name and address should be in a footnote on the first page.
Papers should be typewritten originals, and the greatest care should be
given to the overall appearance of the typescript. Manuscripts can be up
to five (5) pages with figures and references. An increase in this number
must be requested and discussed in the cover letter. All manuscripts must
be printed on 8.5 X 11" white paper, (single side printing only), double
spaced, with 12 point letters, all margins on every page must be 1". The
pages must be numbered clearly and cannot be stapled or folded. Only black
ink is accepted.
Two copies of the manuscript with
references and figures plus a cover letter, one computer disk with the
manuscript in a ASCII, Word or Word Perfect document on a PC formatted
floppy, the completed copyright assignments letter from the publisher and
classification of the paper shall be sent for submission to Peter S. Horanyi,
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Life Sciences Building,UGA
Athens, GA 30602.
All figures should be clear with figure legends on separate pages. All figures must be in TIF format if submitted on disk or hard copy must be provided.
Keywords: Authors are asked to consult the annual cumulative subject index of Biochimica et Biophysica Acta or the list of subject headings from Index Medicus for preferred synonyms and standard abbreviations. A maximum of six keywords should be selected and included with the submitted manuscript, not as part of the previous page requirement. American spelling will be used and plural terms avoided, where possible.
References: These will be numbered in square brackets,
e.g. [6] or [6-8,10], in order of citation in the text. The list of references
will be printed in numerical order at the end of the paper. The references
to journal articles should contain the names and initials of all authors,
year of publication in parentheses, title of the article, abbreviation
of journal titles according to current practice, volume number and inclusive
page numbers. Articles can only be cited as “in press” if a copy of the
acceptance letter is attached at the time of submission. References to
edited books should include the names and initials of the authors, year
of publication in parentheses, title of the chapter, the title of book
following “In:”, name and initials of the editor(s) in parentheses, volume,
edition, inclusive page numbers and name and location of the publisher.
No part of the reference should be underlined and ‘and’ should be used
instead
of ‘&’. Citation of ‘unpublished’ and ‘personal communications’ should
be placed in the main text.
For websites, after the [number] put
the name of the website, the infomration acquired, then if it is a part
of many pages, the homepage and its name the date of acquiring the data
from the site, also include the last update of the site if possible. The
two dates should be distinguished by putting “last updated:” then the date.
(Do not label the visiting date and separate with a semicolon) if last
updated is not available then ignore. Examples of Journals [1] books [2]

Proofs will be read by the editors and will not be supplied to authors. The articles can not be altered after their acceptance. If an article is revised or changed in any way during the review process, this will delay the time of publication. Any material published in the journal can be used for non-commercial purposes providing that the original publication is acknowledged accordingly and the author’s approval is obtained. No special permission is needed from the Publisher, the University, or the Managing Editor.
Editorial matters can be taken up with Peter S. Horanyi at 542-3403, or magyar@arches.uga.edu, or at Life Sciences Bldg, Athens, GA 30602.
