- Congratulations to undergraduate students Neil Pfister, Lindsay Jones and Matt Belcher (Terns lab) who have all been awarded 2008 CURO Summer Research Fellowships.
- Congratulations to Dr. Schmidt for securing a research grant from the Institute for the Study of Aging. The project aims to identify chemical compounds that modulate the activity of the insulin-degrading enzyme.
- Congratulations to Dr. Schmidt for being awarded the 2008 University of Georgia Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring Faculty Award.
- Congratulations to Benjamin Alper and Sarah Breevoort of the Schmidt lab for securing the best graduate and undergraduate oral presentation awards, respectively, at the 2008 Southeast Regional Yeast Meeting.
- Gerold Rosenbaum, an Associate Research Scientist in the Department and world renown designer of synchrotron beamlines has received the Advanced Photon Source Compton Award during the APS Users meeting in May. Gerd is a pioneer in the field of biological X-ray diffraction (built the first beamline and took the first diffraction photographs in the early 70's). He also designed and built the UGA owned and operated SER-CAT beamlines at APS.
- Bi Cheng (B.C.) Wang has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the American Crystallographic Association (ACA) Patterson Award: “For significant contribution to the methodology of structure determination from single isomorphous replacement or single-wavelength anomalous scattering data and for its impact on structural biology.” The Patterson Award, established in 1980 is one of the ACS's highest honors and is given to recognize and encourage outstanding research in the structure of matter by diffraction methods, including significant contributions to the methodology of structure determination and/or innovative application of diffraction methods and/or elucidation of biological, chemical, geological or physical phenomena using new structural information.
- Bi Cheng (B.C.) Wang reveived the SER-CAT Golden Magnolia Award for distinguished service to the Southeast Regional Collaborative Access Team at its recent Symposium at the National Cancer Institute.
- Dr. Claiborne Glover has been selected as one of twelve Writing Fellows for the inaugural year (2007/8) of the Writing Fellows Program sponsored by the UGA Center for Teaching and Learning.
